The Committee of the Pay Table of the State of Connecticut, also known as the Committee of Four, was responsible for managing the military finances for the state during the Revolutionary War. Pictured is an original document dated September 20, 1781. It is a note payable for Four Pounds to Ralph Pomeroy, who served as Military Paymaster during the Revolutionary War. The note is signed by committee members Eleazer Wales and Fenn Wadsworth and is vertically countersigned by Hezekiah Rogers. It is signed on the back by Ralph Pomeroy. Financing the Revolutionary War put a significant burden on each of the colonies, which were lacking a federal government to levy taxes. Many colonies, including Connecticut, instead issued these promissory notes.

Hezekiah Rogers(1753 - 1811) served as Aide-de-Camp to General Jedediah Huntington. In January 1777, he was 1st Lieutenant in the 5th Connecticut Provincial Regiment and appointed Regimental Adjutant in June 1777. He transferred to 3d Connecticut Provincial Regiment and was Aide-de-Camp to General Huntington until June 1783. Rogers served in Swift\'s Connecticut Regiment - June 1783 to November 1783. He was Military Storekeeper of United States Army - October 1801.

Eleazer Wales (1732 - 1794) was born on April 20, 1732 in Windham, Connecticut as the first of seven children to Ebenezer and Esther Wales . He was a Yale graduate and in addition to his responsibilities on the Committee, he was a Minister and Justice of the Peace.

Fenn Wadsworth (1750 or 1751 - 1785) was born in Farmington, Connecticut. He was a Brigade Major under General James Wadsworth from 1776 to 1779. He fought in numerous battles during this period, but ultimately his poor health required him to take leave from active service in the military. He eventually held various positions in the government of Connecticut.
