Silverplate Soup Tureen Ornate Cherub Scene with Satyr Finial c.1800\'s Antique :
$3799.00

This is one of those once in a lifetime pieces. This is an extremely rare and large unusual tureen. It is a German silver-plated highly decorated piece from the 1800\'s. I would say this may have been used for stew as to me the size is indicative of a stew pot, but there are a couple of aspects of this piece that may very well have this piece as some sort of punch or warm alcoholic beverage holder (like Wassail).

The largeSatyr (Half human and half beast) finial on top playing his pan flute is known to be the companion of Dionysus/Bacchus (the God of Wine) and these two spent their time drinking, dancing, and chasing nymphs. The side scenes to this piece have 4 different depictions of cherubs: dancing in one, Dancing and swinging in another, picking grapes and making wine, and dancing drinking and riding some sort of cat. On the lid there are 4 scenes of cherubs playing instruments, and a beautifully scalloped edge with flowers. There is a hole at the base of the bottom where a burner properly placed would have been able to have been used to keep whatever was in the pot warm.

This piece is definitely a piece that was made for a party whether it be for stew or alcoholic beverage. If only it could speak and tell the stories of where and what it has scene.

The piece itself is in great condition. There are some minor age issues, with a couple of dings here and there, but nothing major. Because of the piece not having a makers mark that we could find we took this to a very well-known 3rd generation silversmith in the Atlanta area to help us identify it. He immediately knew that it was German made. He also let us know that the piece is made of different metals, from brass top and bottom, copper in the center, and pewter in the piece under the copper.

This piece is an estate find so we don’t have much more than we know this came from the estate of an antique dealers personal collection. While it is in great condition with no real plate loss, it is old, so please don’t expect this piece to be out of the box perfect.

There is the original liner pot on the inside is zinc and does come out. It has some wear and age issues. The rim has separated in a couple of spots, there is oxidation on it, and there are holes where a handle once would have been but is not there now..

These are the approximate measurements:

19.5\" Tall

5\" tall Finial by himself

17\" from handle to handle

13.5\" wide with lid

12\" wide without lid

8\" deep

13.25\" wide from foot to foot

It weights 15lbs
