The inscription reads: \"Pallanza, Italy/ Oct 20, 1921/ To Ashley T. Cole/ With the greetings of/ Sinclair Lewis\".

\"Ashley T. Cole\" was likely Ashley Trimble Cole, who was a New York lawyer and one of the most avid autograph collectors of the 20th century.
