Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton(February 15, 1874 – January 5, 1922), Anglo-Irish explorer who participated in four British expeditions to the Antarctic, of which he led three,camera viewer usedduring his 1907 - 1909 "Nimrod" Expedition to Antarctica; autographed check, dated June 25, 1914, London. Accompanied by aCD of digital images:“Shackleton’s Photographer: Photographs of Scenes & Diary of Incidents in Connection with Happenings to the Weddell Sea Party, 12th October, 1914 5 – 16th October, 1917” by Shane Murphy - 341 fully printable pages; images at 300 dpi.

The British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-1909, the “Nimrod” Expedition, was the first of Shackleton’s expeditions to the Antarctic. There were a range of geographical and scientific objectives, but the expedition’s main objective was to be the first to reach the South Pole. This was not obtained but Shackleton’s southern trek came within 100 miles of the South Pole, the longest southern polar journey at the time and a record convergence on either Pole. Ernest H. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII upon his return to England. Ostensibly, Shackleton used the camera viewer here offered on his “Nimrod” expedition, presenting it to his brother-in-law after his “Endurance” expedition, thanking him for his help with the photographic aspects of his journey to the South Pole.

Camera viewer: 5 x 5 x 0.5 inches when closed using metal clip. Wooden-based folding down black leatherette, shows evidence of use. Opens to 7 inchesin height with a 4 x 2 inch opening on top to look through and a 5 x 5 inch base opening for photograph.Mounted silver plaque, 3.75 x 1.75 inch, engraved in Shackleton’s handwriting: “To H.B.C. Bussey / in remembrance of his / help to me in 1914 / Ernest H. Shackleton.”
