The above quote from the Old Testament is the only passage marked with a small neat \"x\" in this entire leather bound bible, all edges gilt, with the word \"Bible\" in bright,gilt on the spine. Containing the entire Old and New Testaments the title page reads The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments; translated out of The Original Tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, American Bible Society, New York:1863, 32mo (3.25 x 5 in.), no previous ownerships or marks, binding secure, wear to covers, age toning to preliminaries, otherwise near fine.

It is intriguing to speculate that given the year of publication, it is at least possible that a Union soldier took this little Bible with him into battle during the American Civil War 1861-1865. It is known that the American Bible Society of New York printed a considerable number of additional Bibles during the Civil War years ostensibly with those both going into battle and those left behind. But given the compactness of this Bible,it may well have accompanied a solider into war.

We have had similar Bibles by the American Bible Society with notes in pencil on the front or rear blank leaves noting various battles fought in. And while this Bible bears no such marks other than the aforementioned penciled \"x\" next to the Jeremiah passage - one must ask the question, why? Why that single passage about Babylon? A reference to slavery? To being out of one\'s own home territory? Certainly a lament of any homesick soldier? Who knows?
