There is an arena of animation collecting that is the rarest of all - and contains some of the most fascinating art available. It is the art done by animators for each other, family and friends. It often features our favorite characters in unique situations you will find nowhere else. Two subsets of this arena are the gag drawings and get well drawings. This one falls into the later.
It\'s of a female dwarf from Snow white! Clearly done during the making of Snow White, as the language is vintage (Castor Oil!), the animation paper is proper, etc. What is fascinating is the names involved. Here we can only speculate as we have no history with the piece. But the two names listed are M. Bell (giver) and Dorothy (receiver). In abrief exploration of who this might be the first names that come up are Dorothy Ann Blank who was one of the storyboard artists that developed the final story for the film and Marjorie Celeste Belcher (nicknamed Margie Bell) who was the young dancer that server as the live-action model for Snow White - basically she WASSnow White. She also later served as the model for the Blue Fairy in Pinocchio.
Of course neither of these is likely the animator - but if our conjecture is true, then this is likely done by one of the nine old men for Margie to give to Dorothy which makes it incredible rare and important. Note the quick and sure skill used to draw the hands and eyes - clearly a master animator.
Perhaps the best example of this arena ofcollecting that comes to mind is the piece from the 1992 Superiorsale of the estate of Mel Blanc, which featured 14 Warner Brothers characters all sick in a bed and signed by the animators, wishing Mel would get well! It is believed the family took the item back instead of making a sale.
