Solid Silver Imperial Russian Tray with Niello Decoration
This solid silver tray is one of the survivors of the Russian Revolution. The tray is approximately 7 7/8 inches in diameter and is of a heavy gauge of silver, weighing 8 1/4 ounces. Its hallmarks show that it was made in Moscow (St. George slaying the dragon) in 1895 (in the assay mark). It is 875/1000 silver, as attested by the 84 zolotniki mark. (Zoltniki are an old Russian weight measure.)
The surface of the tray is decorated in an intricate niello style, with beautiful, raised curlicue patterns adorning the tray\'s surface. On the rim of the tray there are very lightly etched, sinuous patterns. This work has been done by a master craftsman and is beautifully and deftly executed. The surface of the tray is in extremely good condition for its age.

There is some wear on the bottom of the tray, but it is not exceptional given how old the piece is. There is a small dent on the underside of the rim, but it is not visible when the tray sits right side up. Considering that the tray has been through a revolution, counterrevolution and two world wars, it is pretty amazing it has come down to us in such good shape. The tray might benefit from having a little polishing.
The tray is a lovely survivor from a more beautiful time. It would make a nice drinks tray and would grace any surface it would sit upon.
