This is an unusual item. It contains a dedication and signature by the author Sir William Robertson Nicoll - I cannot see another signature of his online.

Then there is the bookplate of Ernest H Shackleton. It is a simple one but seems to be genuine. If we look at this blog written nine years ago - [link removed by ]- and scroll down to the bottom of the page you will see the exact same bookplate with provenance.

And why would Shackleton want a book that is a collection of poems and hymns for the distressed, the dying and the dead? Well, he was leading meninto danger zones and the risk of injury and death and becoming despondent (one of the chapter headings) was obvious. To have words of comfort ready would make sense.

The condition of this book is as the photos show.

There is foxing on the front and back endpapers and blank pages leading up to title page. Thereafter there is no foxing on the text pages, no tears, no markingsno folds. The book is tightly
