This wonderfully sinister Songye power figure has its head turned to one side, representing a malevolent spirit, \"the ferryman of the river of death\" ( JB Bacquart, The tribal Arts of Africa,p 170)
Elaborately festooned with beads, iron rings, brass plates and nails, the figure also contains magical material set into the horn on the head and wrapped in snakeskin around the waist.
These figures are rare and this is an outstanding large example.
