Spectacular 1790s Turner Georgian stoneware jug w/1799 sterling silver rim & lid:
$299.99

We are listing this truly spectacular looking very rarely sprigged 1790s Georgian brown glazed creamy white stoneware classical jug (with a superb 1799 sterling silver rim and domed lid by the London silversmith John Troby) which was made by the great English potter John Turner (a friend and later competitor of Josiah Wedgwood), who was appointed The Potter to The Prince of Wales in 1784. The jug features an very rarely seen central sprig of Drunken Silenus being hoisted back on his donkey by his followers. Silenus was the tutor of the Greek God of Wine Dionysus, and he is traditionally pictured in a very drunken state. Drunken Silenus scenes sometimes appear on Georgian drinking jugs, but most have a simple cartoonish quality to them, whereas this Turner scene is much more complex and sophisticated (reminiscent of classical Roman and Greek scenes). The jug has a wonderful sterling silver rim and domed lid. It is marked on one side of its rim and on the underside of its lid with a duty mark facing right, a lion passant, the date letter D (used in 1799-1800), and an IT maker\'s mark. This mark was registered in 1787 by London silversmith John Troby (see page 128 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). There is also a crest/monogram of a crown over F & C under the front of its lid, but I don\'t know the meaning or family association of this mark. John Turner was known for the hard, dense dry-bodied stoneware he created using a specific type of white clay, and for the quality and innovative nature of his sprigging, which rivaled and sometimes surpassed Wedgwood\'s. This jug epitomizes the qualities that made him so famous, with its beautifully potted creamy white body, striking brown glaze at the top, Turner\'s trademark acanthus leaf handle terminal, and its sublimely sprigged details. As discussed above, the central sprig is a wonderful scene, and it is one of Turner\'s most rarely seen classical sprigs. The jug also features very nice tree and foliage sprigs on each side, a band of sprigged grapevines below its neck, and engine turning above its base. With its lid it is 9.75 inches tall, 7.5 inches at its widest point, superbly glazed and sprigged (with a wonderful classical scene), it makes a spectacular display piece, and it is in very good condition (there may be an extremely thin hairline inside the spout). John Turner\'s masterpieces can be found in many of the great museums and personal collections around the world, and this is a simply stunning looking example of both his creativity and his attention to detail (with a very rarely seen central sprig). Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself.
