Spectacular huge circa1900 Pennsylvania? folk art slip glazed stoneware inkstand:
$289.99

We are listing this huge very unusual looking folk art slip glazed stoneware inkstand, complete with 2 removable decorative ink holders, a removable lidded jar, a removable sander/pounce pot, and two removable drawers. The piece is unmarked (typical of old stoneware), but my best guess is that it was made around 1900 in Pennsylvania by a very talented potter with a Dutch or German heritage. The basic design is reminiscent of fancy Westerwald inkstands from the 1700s - you can see several examples of those inkstands from the internationally acclaimed Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts) in Berlin on pages 400-405 of the German book STEINZEUG (Stoneware). The listed inkstand is much larger than a normal inkstand and it has a multicolored slip glaze finish, which makes me think it was more likely produced in America than in Germany, since its finish is closer to the glaze finish seen on some Pennsylvania red ware and yellow ware pieces than German Westerwald. It was probably meant to be a decorative item rather than a functional inkstand, given its massive size and weight (10 pounds), and it does not appear to have ever had any ink in its inkholders. The inkholders feature an animal figure on their fronts (either a cat or a bear), and there is a decorative trellis at the top of the stand which is draped with grapevines which flow down over the pen holders below that. The piece is quite large - almost 8.75 inches tall, almost 13 inches wide, and over 7.25 inches from front to back - it makes a spectacular and most interesting looking display piece, and it is in very good condition. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. This is quite possibly a one of a kind folk art creation, and it makes a wonderful display/decorator piece as well.
