Spectacularly sprigged very rare 1809-1815 Chetham & Woolley Georgian urn/vase :
$499.99

We are listing this very rare superbly sprigged spectacular looking 1809-1815 Georgian brown glazed white felspathic stoneware raised urn or vase (with very unusual satyr-type handles) which was made by the Chetham & Woolley Pottery (founded by James Chetham and Richard Woolley). Although the piece is unmarked (only a very few marked Chetham & Woolley pieces exist), it can easily be attributed to the pottery based on its very distinctive geometric and floral sprigging which has been found on both identified Chetham & Woolley pieces and on excavated shards from the former site of the pottery. The piece can also be dated to the 1809-1815 period when Chetham & Woolley stonewares were being sold through the London ceramics retailer James Mist (based on similar marked Mist pieces). On page 154 of ENGLISH DRY-BODIED STONEWARE Wedgwood and Contemporary Manufacturers 1774-1830 there are three Mist-type vases from the Blakey Collection which exactly match the top part of the listed piece in every way including the handles (they do not have the base piece below the urn), except they have different classical sprigs on their sides. Chapter 8 of CHETHAM & WOOLLEY STONEWARES 1793-1821 details all of the archaeological and historical analysis that confirms the Chetham & Woolley/James Mist relationship and pictures several of the known Mist-type pieces. On page 72 of that chapter you can see other confirmed pieces which have the same Chetham & Woolley elaborate floral band and very striking geometric patterns as the listed piece (including one which features the very uncommon large diagonal leaf designs seen on the base portion of the listed piece). The listed piece has a superb sprig of the Roman god Mercury (and his dog) or the Greek equivalent god Hermes on one side, and an equally impressive sprig on the other side commonly referred to as Sportive Love (featuring a woman/goddess playing with a winged cherub). This particular scene was originally created for Josiah Wedgwood by Elizabeth Upton, Baroness Templeton, an English artist who specialized in detailed cut-paper work which adapted well to Wedgwood\'s jasper ware (her designs were made into sprigs by Wedgwood\'s famous modeler William Hackwood). You can see Wedgwood\'s Sportive Love sprig on page 81 of ENGLISH DRY-BODIED STONEWARE Wedgwood and Contemporary Manufacturers 1774-1830, with the notation that it was listed in Wedgwood\'s 1786 sales records as \"Lady Templeton\'s Children Toe Charlotte\"). The Turner Pottery used a slightly modified more elaborate version of the sprig on their jasper ware in the 1790s (you can see this version on page 181 of the book), and it is this version that Chetham & Woolley used on the listed piece. The listed urn is very striking - over 8 inches tall and 5.25 inches at its widest point - it is superbly and very elaborately sprigged and makes an extremely impressive display piece, and it is in very good condition. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. A very rarely seen spectacular looking piece of Georgian stoneware. I believe it would not be an overstatement to say this is a museum quality example of Chetham & Woolley\'s work.
