Together with the names of those who belonged to Rhode Island regiments in the army. With biographical notices, reminiscences, etc. etc. By Benjamin Cowell. Boston: A. J. Wright, 1850. First edition. A major work on Rhode Island\'s share in the American War of Independence. Beginning by discussing a number of women who played a significant part in the struggle, Cowell proceeds to sketch events chronologically accompanied by a wealth of mini-biographies, lists of members of various units (including the pay due to them after the war), acts and proclamations, correspondence of major and minor players (much published here for the first time), first hand accounts, and not sparing from his lists the names of deserters. The book is in very good minus condition. The corners are bumped and worn. The top and bottom spine edges are chipped. There is sun-fading and some light staining to the boards and spine. Although the front hinge is cracked, the binding remains firm and square. The pages are very clean overall, with an occasional light smudge; several pages in the middle are affected by significant creasing towards the bottom; otherwise there are a few small corner creases. There is an owner name to the title page.
