When I say early., I mean EARLY. This model 1902 sword for all officers was made in 1903 or 1904 according to the book , SWORDS and SABERS of the SPRINGFIELD ARMORY by Burton Kellerstedt. This sword has the first type of etching and only used in 1903 & 1904. A total of 5735 1902 sabres were made by Springfield Armory between 1902 and 1918. The single edged blade is just short of 32 long and 15/16 wide at the ricasso. The blade is in MINT condition with no pitting or dark spots. Prior to 1905 the scabbards and hilt were made of German silver and had the horn grips. The horn grips were used prior to 1914. The hilt is in excellent condition with no bends or breaks. German silver proved to soft so they went to nickle platted steel hilts and scabbards after 1914. One of the scabbard rings is missing, easly replaced by a jewler. These early swords by SA are getting hard to find, especially one in this from: 1903Circa Type: 3 FullerReferences: 1. World Swords 1400 -1945 - A price guide for collectors, page 213.
