Theillegitimateson of aSpanishnobleman, Juan, and a young freedblackslave, Anna Velasquez, Martin grew up inpoverty. He spent part of hisyouthwith asurgeon-barberfrom whom he learned somemedicineand care of thesick. At age 11 he became aservantin the Holy RosaryDominicanprioryinLima,Peru. Promoted toalmoner, hebeggedmore than $2,000 a week from the rich to support thepoorandsickofLima. Placed in charge of theDominican‘sinfirmary; known for his tender care of thesickand for his spectacularcures. His superiors dropped the stipulation that “noblackperson may be received to the holyhabitor profession of ourOrder” and Martin took vows as aDominicanbrother in1603. Established thepoorchildrenof the slums. Set up ashelterfor the straycatsanddogsandnursedthem back to health. Lived in self-imposed austerity, never ate meat, fasted continuously, and spent much time inprayerand meditation with a great devotion to theHoly Eucharist. Friend ofSaintJohn de Massias.

He was venerated from the day of hisdeath. Many miraculouscures, including raising thedeadattributed to Brother Martin. Firstblacksaintfrom theAmericas.
