\"Italian born, Alfred Sciarrotta (1907-1985) wassmuggled out of Italy in 1944 by U.S. Army Intelligence to work on submarine armaments for the Allied war effort. After WWII, he settled in Rhode Island and opened Sciarrotta Silversmiths in Newport. His design skills and craftsmanship were quickly noted by such firms as Cartier, Gorham, Shreve Crump & Low, Gump\'s and Bailey, Banks & offerdle, and they soon begancommissioning special orders from him. By the time of his retirement in 1975, several of Sciarrotta\'s works were in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.\"
This has been cleaned and polished by a silver restoration specialist to look like near new. It has a beautiful mirror finish. There are no significant dents or scratches. However, it does show signs of use with minor surface scratches. See photos. It is marked with \"Black, Starr & Gorham\", \"Sterling\", \"10\" and \"Handmade by Sciarrotta\".
Do not be fooled by sellers referring to dirt and tarnish as patina. A proper patina is created by polishing to a mirror finish. The patina is maintained and improved over time with regular cleaning and polishing. Tarnish that is allowed to remain too long damages the patina and causes pitting. Scratched and pitted surfaces attract more tarnish and are more difficult to clean requiring a professional polish to restore the patina. This has a beautiful patina that feels clean and smooth to the touch. It looks as if it belongs in a museum.
Grab a piece of history. This beautiful one of a kind piece would look great on acoffee or end table. It is sure to get attention and is a great conversation starter with the WWII connection.
