Main Description

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver vinaigrette has an elongated asymmetrical form, realistically modelled in the form of a mussel shell.

The anterior and posterior surfaces of the vinaigrette are embellished with subtle chased decoration replicating the contours of the natural shell.

The tension bearing ligament of the organic shell is replicated with a hinge and allows access to the original hinged pierced scrolling leaf decorated gilt grille.

The decoration to the grille incorporates the maker’s details ‘S Mordan & Co, London’ in addition to a ‘lozenge mark’ which certifies the patent of this piece on 29th February 1876 with the UK Patent Office.

The narrow end of the mussel features a ring loop attachment.

The vinaigrette retains the original gilded interior.

This impressive vinaigrette, crafted by the renowned London silversmith Sampson Mordan & Co, is a rare example of its type.

Condition

This Victorian vinaigrette is a very good gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The chased decoration is very sharp.

The maker’s mark and lozenge mark struck to the anterior surface of the grille are all very clear.
