There is an old Hispanic, South American and Central American custom of “ringing the bell” for a day at home when a loved one passes or when a child is born - to ward away any bad spirits who may take advantage of an opening created in the “curtain” between worlds, both in the passing, and bringing, of new life. Thus, it is called a Mourning Bell or a Passing Bell. Peruvians call this bell \"La Tapada\" or \"The Veiled One”.

The lady’s face is covered with a shawl and there is a handkerchief in her hand. These two elements are usually the same. Each bell is then hand embellished with unique designs. Great patina from age and use; we do not polish. Height is 2.75 inches; bottom diameter about 1.7 inches. Weight is 65.1 grams or 2.3 ounces. Marked 925 and another hard to read mark. Clanger intact.
