This beautiful antique sterling silver nutmeg grater is in the rare shape of a miniature kitchen grater, with a sturdy loop at the top, perhaps for a butler\'s chain. The grating surface is curved, with a hollow behind it, and an open space at the bottom, so the grated nutmeg falls through. This surface, with the rasps carefully arranged in a pattern, appears to be silver.
There is a delicate pattern along the borders, front and back, which is repeated along the edges of the top.
It is fully hallmarked on the back with the lion for sterling, the leopard head for London, and the date letter a for 1896. There appears to be a worn maker\'s mark also, but it is illegible.
This unique grater would be an outstanding addition to any collection.
