Stunning 1890s Indian Calcutta silver village scene lotus bowl stemmed vase :

A wonderful antique 19th century Mughal-style, Calcutta sterling silver stemmed vase/goblet/bowl in the form of a lotus flower rising from a three-leaved base, decorated with an all-over raised relief repousse and engraved village scene, the people, buildings, palm trees, animals birds and flowers of a Bengal landscape, in the style of top silversmith, Grish Chunder Dutt. Indian colonial silver doesn\'t get much better than this.

Very well crafted in the traditional manner of Calcutta (Kolkata) silver, in the bulbous, eight-petal lappet form of a lotus flower, entirely covered with traditional Bengali figural work in raised relief on a matted ground. Each time you turn it something new pops up. I\'ve just noticed a songbird I hadn\'t seen before.

Maker\'s mark:Unmarked, as most Indian silver is, but tests for sterling silver and identical in style to those marked for Grish Chunder Dutt. The village scenes among palm trees are typical motifs of Calcutta decoration.

Date:Late 1800s to early 1900s, British Raj period.

Condition:Excellent, no problems. It leans a little, but an easy fix if you wished to. No bends, dents, splits or repairs. Beautiful patina of antique silver.

Size:Vase stands is 5.5 inches (14 cm)tall and 4.25 inches (10.2 cm) across the bowl. Good gauge silver, weighs a satisfactory 192 grams.
