Here for your consideration is a magnificent, rare, antique, late 19th century, Victorian, circa 1890, chryselephantine sewing etui/necessaire, of rectangular form, withhinged opening, to reveal a delightful original fitted interior, complete with a set of five gilt metal and steel implements, having engraved scroll and flower decoration.

The case has a tiny base retailer\'s engraved black stamp for \"A. Barrett and Sons, 63 & 64 Piccadilly, London\".

A truly stunning piece of workmanship with beautiful age related patination. Considering this chryselephantine etui/necessaire is 125 years of age, its in fantastic original condition, complete with bodkin, needle, scissors, thimble, and pin case.

Condition: no damage, splits or restoration and most importantly nothing missing. It does have some discolouration/wear,commensurate with 125 years of age, but nothing unusual. Theworkmanship and fine detail is absolutely exquisite and as you\'re probably already aware, these 19th century necessaire\'shave become hugely collectable.

Andrew Barrett and Sons ...

Andrew Barrett was born in Ireland in 1819. The company was first registered in 1854. They worked from premises at 63 & 64 piccadilly, London between 1878-1910 before moving to 157-158 Piccadilly, London and thensubsequently in 1920 they finally moved to 9 Old Bond Street, London until 1975/76. Originally brush makers and trunk makers by 1914 they were listed as dressing bag manufacturers, silversmiths and jewellers, specialising in high class novelties, curio\'s, antiques, semi precious stones, ivorine and jade. They also held a Royal Warrant for the supply ofspirit based lamps and water heaters !!

Etui/Necessaire ...

Definition: A small object, usually portable, designed to contain an array of even smaller items for daily use (\"nécessaire\" means necessary in French) the actualpronunciation is (ness-eh-sare) most were hand or pocket-sized. The early 18th/19th century original examples held practical articles, like sewing accessories (needles, pencils and scissors) by the early 20th century they had shrunk even further in size andbegan to function as small handbags, carrying cosmetics, cigarettes or toiletries !!

This is as good as it gets with regards a 19th century necessaire\'s,it\'s all original and undamaged, and how many of these have you seen, still intact.This is an extremely rarefind indeed. I\'ve only got one, once it\'s gone .... it\'s gone. You might never findanother one this good, and if there\'s one thing I\'ve learned about antiques, when items are of qualityhe who hesitates usually loses out.

Thisbeautiful chryselephantine etui/necessairewould add value to any sewing collection. Frenchnecessaire\'s have become so very collectable and areappreciating in value. A stylish Victorian etui/necessaire thathas stunningdetailed decoration. A realmust for anyserious collector.
