Collected in the 1960\'s by a manager of a large multi-national firm whospent 25 years living and working in PNG in the East New Britain area aroundKokopo, this is a beautiful very rare vintage carved wood and bamboo Spear Thrower with Hornbill carving fromthe Sepik River of New Guinea. At the mouth of the Sepik river of New Guinea,the spear is the preferred weapon for hunting and war. Hand thrown spears arelong and heavy but a lighter bamboo spear is thrown with the aid of athrowing-stick. In most cases, spears are made with long slender wooden headswith many barbs and are often beautifully decorated with carved or inciseddesign. This old spear thrower is a stunning old piece with estimated age ofthe piece between 1940’s to 1950’s. This piece is part of a wonderfulcollection amassed by this individual (who wishes to remain anonymous) and herhusband over a 25 year period and brought back to Australia in the early 90\'s.Over 600 pieces in total.
