Here is the Emerson 517 AM radio, the \'Moderne\' from 1947, restored physically and electronically to its original glory. Created by famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy, this radio brought high design into the home.The gorgeous black plastic cabinet is in nearly perfect condition, free of cracks, chips, or noteworthy scratches. Now cleaned and polished, it offers beautiful viewing from all angles, as the radio chassis is only visible from the bottom. The mesh metal grill, restored to the golden glow, has neither dents nor corrosion.
The Lucite dial cover is clear with nochips or scratchesbut with a minor crack just below the Plascon dial light cover. Now with a new dial bulb installed, the dial and red dial pointer with its polished brass base provide easy reading of the dial along with that remarkable glow in a darkened room.
The cabinet sports an integrated handle in the top, useful for easy carrying the radio while allowing fast exit for the heat from the five tubes. The original feet are on the bottom and the labels are on the bottom and inside. The original ivory Plascon knobs look great, work as expected, and have no cracks or chips.
The electronics have been restored with all paper and electrolytic capacitors replaced with modern units, tubes tested and replaced if performing below specs, controls cleaned and lubricated, and the set aligned. The result is sensitive reception across the AM band from the internal loop antenna with tons of volume and fine tone from the original speaker. The power cord and plug are modern.
