A bit of history...

The production of Bressan Enamels is tiny compared to the history of enamelling in general, the variety of techniques, cultural regions and artistic changes in enamelled objects. Its origin remain mysterious. Nevertheless, one thing sources do agree on is the evolution of enamel work in Bresse: the work has been around since the 14th to the 18th century, while \"Bressan enamels\" the objects themseves, appear from the later half of 19th century.

When Bressan enamels were at their height, from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of 20th century, some of the jewellers and goldsmiths of the town center of Bourg-en-Bresse stood alongside each other. This period in enamelling history sees an abundance of paillons, cabochons and enamel beads, corresponding to the style of the time.

The heyday of Bressan enamels coincided with a moment of widespread enthusiasm for the universal expositions. Bonnet, Fornet, a clever salesman and Decourcelles played the game and got their creation into the limelight, setting up booths with resembled their shops in Bourg-en-Bresse. Here they attracted a prestigious clientele, such as the shah of Iran, and even gained the attention of the Victoria & Albert Museum of London

The Jewel...

Concentricity is the guiding principle for the decoration of Bressan enamels. A Rose-paillon, itself decorated with a central enamel bead or glass gem, is placed in the center of enamelled plaque. Other guiding factors are the medial axis, the radiant axis and the profile of the backing, wich are marked to varying degrees with paillons, cut glass , or enamel beads set into godets d\'or. Up until first quarter of 20th century glass ans enamel beads were frequently used to subsitute and imitate precious stones.
