Stunning Vintage 1940s Rex Playboy 3/4 Terz Size Acoustic Parlor Guitar with Original Two-Tone Brown Case, in excellent restored condition, made in USA!
Beautiful Vintage 1940s Rex Playboy 3/4 Size Acoustic Parlor Guitar in Excellent Restored Condition, made in Chicago, USA. This was most likely made by Kay and the Rex brand of guitars were distributed by The Gretsch Company. This was their answer to the Martin 5-18 Terz Models used by Marty Robbins and is nearly as cool, for a fraction of the price. This one features a solid spruce top with multi-bound top and sound hole, bound mahogany back with mahogany sides and neck with a rosewood fingerboard. It’s a small, short scale guitar with an 11” lower bout and an 8” upper bout, 1-3/4” nut width and a 21-5/8” scale length. It has a very thick “Louisville slugger” neck, which explains why it’s perfectly straight after all of these years. The original “no-line” Kluson tuners are working great with new Stew Mac creme buttons, headstock logo still intact. The original brass frets have been lightly dressed and are in very good shape, tortoiseshell pickguard is intact and original bone nut is still working fine. The original bridge has been fitted with a new handmade compensated bone saddle for improved intonation. The bridge pins are nice and most likely not original and the end pin is a great fitting replacement from the parts bin. This beauty has received a neck reset to obtain excellent action and playability, with plenty of room on the new saddle for any future adjustments it may need. Action is set at about 5/64” to 3/32” at 12th fret with new D’Addario 11-52 gauge 80/20 bronze strings. This little guitar has impressive volume and sounds just wonderful. The wide string spacing makes this little guitar very easy to play and particularly good for finger style playing, even with large hands. It has a very unique voice and would be a great addition to any collection. There are no cracks, crack repairs or unusual warping, the guitar is in excellent structural condition with some minor scratches, dings and signs of wear. The cool original two-tone brown and white case is included with the sale and has an ugly repaired hinge and compartment door, as well as some bulging and expected wear and tear. Still very cool and capable of protecting the guitar well. This is a very rare and amazing little guitar, please keep in mind that it’s nearly 75 years old and has endured a great deal of work to be playable again. I have a lot of experience shipping guitars and will get this to you safely. Be sure to check out my other guitars for sale and thanks for looking!
