Superb 1777 Georgian English Sterling Silver Berry Spoon

Presented is a fine old Georgian English sterling silver berry serving spoon. This piece is dated 1777 and was likely made by John Schofield. The spoon is made in a classical round ended form, with a downward turn to the end of the handle. The bowl of the spoon is beautifully hand chased with a design of fruit and leaves, very finely textured and detailed work. The handle of the spoon is also beautifully decorated with floral and foliate designs, which are likewise very detailed and well executed. The bowl of the spoon also has a gold wash, protecting the silver from corrosion or pitting while serving acidic berries or other foods. The terminal of the handle has a finely engraved crest of a griffin\'s head emerging from a crown on the front.

This piece is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard\'s head crowned for the city of London, the date letter b for 1777, and the maker\'s mark J S, likely for John Schofield.

The spoon is in great condition. There are no splits, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs.

The spoon is about 8 1/4 inches long.

The spoon weighs 55 grams or 1.9 regular ounces.
