Alovely old Brass and Copper Dutch Tobacco box dating from around1775. This one is in excellent condition still showing its originalengraving. Usually this has worn away. Here represented are charmingscenes from the Bible, please see pictures; on the lid Psalm 5. 21.22. And shows animals including a unicorn at the bottom, the otherside has a victory of the sea with a wonderful roaring Lion at thebottom, all beautifully, although a little naively engraved.
Obviouslyon a box of this vintage, there is some damage, but not as much asyou would expect, just a minor loss to the folded metal on one side.The hinge is still very good and undamaged and no repairs, which isunusual; these boxes were well used and seem to always show runningrepairs. A very interesting and attractive piece which very rarelycome on the market in this condition.
