Superb Antique Edwardian Hallmarked Silver Folding Lorgnette & Long Guard Chain:

Here on offer is a superb pair of antique Edwardian hallmarkedsilver folding lorgnettes with a long guard chain.

The handle of the lorgnettes have an elegantlytapering handle with a subtle engraved diamond pattern on the ribbed shape.There is a balustrade ferule about one third along the handle, that has a smallbutton to release the lorgnettes eyepiece for use. The mechanism is in goodorder. It has a large fixed ring with the long guard chain attached so that itcan be worn around the neck. Between the handle and the lens frame is awonderfully shaped bracket with a foliate design in shallow relief. The framesand bridge between are in plain polished silver. The lenses are without damage,apart from one very small chip along an outer edge. There is a small dent onone side of the handle close to the lenses.

The inside of the bridge has a maker’s mark, ‘JN’who I am unable to identify. The long guard chain has the leopards head for London,a lion passant for silver and the year mark ‘n’ for 1908. The makers mark is ‘HB&S’in a rectangle for Herbert Bushall & Sons Limited.

The lorgnettes are offered in good antique condition.Folded they measure about 13.3cm by 4.3cm, the lenses are 4cm in diameter, thebridge is 3.5cm, the chain measures 102cm, they weigh together 53g
