Gorgeous antique French hallmarked sterling silver & cut glass or crystal 9 5/8\" claret jug or carafe, beautifully ornate with Classical acanthus & cattail accents & finial and wheel cut body! There for the longest time it seemed like we could never keep a stunning old French sterling silver claret jug in stock for very long. We currently have one single and a matched pair, in addition to this one. All in different styles and all exceptional! This one with an elegant Empire or Classical style including a rocaille shaped collar where the sterling meets the glass body, acanthus accents to the side and wrapped around the handle and the unique addition of the very French cattails on the base of the handle and in the lid finial! All of the separate silver parts (handle, lid & body) bear the French Minerve or Minerva hallmark, the tiny number \"1\" within those marks means they are in .950 silver (95% pure and higher than the .925 standard for \"sterling\" silver). The silversmith marks are for Henin & Cie. (Co.), Paris circa 1896. A gorgeous piece in superb condition, don\'t miss it! Some signs of tarnish visible in the images, sorry :), and possibly the tiniest of dimples but no large dents, no damage or repairs to note. There are visible remnants of a vermeil finish and we think that this one may have originally been gilded with an 18k gold vermeil over the sterling silver, at least in places as accents. No chips that I can see to the glass and there are no cracks. There is some scratching to the very bottom or base of the glass body. Insurance has been eliminated as an option by , forcing us sellers to either ship your items without insurance or assume that expense also. Our shipping days are Tuesday and Friday, paid items will be shipped on the first shipping day after payment is recieved (except when special circumstances exist). We prefer to use USPS whenever possible, and require all packages to be insured. If you prefer another method of shipment, please mention it. We charge only actual expense of shipment/insurance, except in the case of larger items which must have special wood crates built. Wood crate charge, when applicable, is a flat $35.00 in addition to actual postage & insurance charges.
