This fantastic early GeorgeIII silver coffee pot is of the very highest quality - testament to thatquality is the magnificent coat of arms engraved to one side.

The partnership of DanielSmith & Robert Sharp was one of the leading silversmithing workshops of theperiod and this jug is typical of their fine output. The coffee pot is in thepitcher style (with high spout) that was introduced and in fashion during thelate 1760’s – 70’s. The pitcher style was later re-introduced for hot waterjugs. But this is a genuine example of an original coffee jug.

This baluster shaped, Georgiancoffee jug has a hefty feel in the hand and a beautiful balance. It has a gadroonmount and wrythen finial to the hinged cover – an archetypal example of a late1760’s coffee jug! It is in lovely original condition with just some very minordamage to the lower heat insulator on the silver handle.

The underside is clearlyhallmarked and the cover appropriately part marked.

The engraved coat-of-arms onthis jug are those of the Dering family impaling Farnaby and almost certainlycommemorate the marriage of Charles Dering and Elizabeth Farnaby in 1770. TheDerings were an ancient Kentish family and Charles was the second son of SirEdward Dering, the 5th Baronetof Surrenden and MP for New Romney.Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir Thomas Farnaby, the 2nd Baronet of Wickam.They lived at Barham Court near Maidstone in Kent.
