London: Thomas Meriton - 2 1/2 troy oz - SUPERB & RARE

This is a superbGEORGIAN solid sterling silverpap boat which was made in London, England in 1822 by the illustrious Georgian silversmith, William Bateman at his Bunhill Row workshops. Pap boats were used to feed babies or sometimes invalids. \'Pap\' was usually a mixture of bread, milk (or water) and flour - and the term apparently derives from the noise a baby makes when feeding. The work is of excellent craftsmanship. This boat has a stunning plain finish with areeded rim and is NOT engraved. It measures 1 1/2\" high by 2 1/2\" wide by4\" long from handle to lip. It isquite substantial - it weighs in at78.7 grams -over 2 1/2troy oz.

It is in very good condition for its age with less than the usual amount of surface scratching, almost NO dingsbut NO dents, and NO cracking or repairs - it stands nicely level - see photographs - SUPERB. It is hallmarked with TM, lion passant (sterling silver assay mark), crowned leopard head, D, George III duty markshowing that it was hallmarked in London in 1799.
