This sale is for a Striking, Rare and Large Antique Art Pottery Jardiniere featuring a highly molded and stylized Art Nouveau pattern with repeating Flowers and Winged Griffons made by J.B. Owens Pottery Co. of Zanesville, Ohio circa 1895.
The piece is Lovely in all respects, from its rich dark brown to green to tan blended glaze to its molding of 4 winged mythological beasts to its footed base and scalloped edging.
Pieces in this pattern are increasingly hard to find, and I could not find another example this large anywhere online.
The jardinière measures about 12 inches tall and 13 inches across. The base is 7 3/4 inches across.
With its large size and great subject matter, the piece Displays Wonderfully.
It has a Commanding Presence and will Instantly become the Decorative Focal Point of any room.
It is in Surprisingly Good shape especially for its age – 120 years old.
There are no cracks. There is under-the-glaze crazing as expected from art pottery of this era, a few small spots of missing glaze at the inner lip (photo 11) and a small flea bite on the inner lip (last photo). There are manufacturing flaws (missing glaze / material and firing lines / marks / wear ) on the underside footed area (photo 10). It doesn’t detract from this Great Find.
The piece is not marked as was often the case with early art pottery.
Please note that there are white spots from reflected light on the photos. They are not on the jardinière.
