Up for sale is a superb mirror pair of vintage handpainted Chinese famille rose mille fleur doucai double happiness porcelain vases.This pair of vases was designed for occasions of wedding or marriage anniversaries.
The vases are decorated with assorted under and over glazes of red, yellow, blue, pink, green etc. with the theme of Double Happiness, Auspicious Luck and Prosperity. The decoration starts with a lotus band in turquoise and copper red glazes; then auspicious Baoxiang （meaning preciousness, auspice）flowers and vines rise in pink, red, green, yellow, blue etc. rise and intertwine the entire body of the vase. Amid the flowers and vines on each side of the vase are two large pink lotus flowers over a gold gilt \"Double Happiness\" character; on the front and back are two copper red bats each on one side hovering protectively over another gilt \"Double Happiness\" character.The decoration continues up the slender neck up to the flared trumpet-shaped mouth. The bottom and inside are of creamy light celadon glaze. Doucai porcelain is a high tech in porcelain making and very difficult to produce. The multiple underglazes and overglazes require different temperatures thus multiple firings.Double happiness character is a symbol of wedding and marriage as two persons are joined together hand in hand. Bats and lotus are symbol of blessings, luck and good fortunes. The four double happiness characters, bats and lotus flowers form on four directions meaning blessings and fortunes come from all directions. Also in Chinese the word \"vase \"(ping) is a pun for peace, security and smooth going of things.
