ITEM DESCRIPTION
Item Description
Up for your consideration is an exquisite early American seaman\'s personal chest, c. 1850 - 1870. The piece is made of 3\" x 1\"wood slats, and completely covered withhand-hammered brass sheets, that have further been adhered with bronze strapping. This includes the underside, and was done to protect the wood from seawater. The chest has been ornately and profusely been further adorned with100+ hand-decorated panels (something only a sailor would have time to do). The front of the chest features 15 panels, each decorated with a different animals. The box is hinged, and also has 4 carved wood wheelsattached to twoaxels.
These boxes are extremely rare, and this is the most exceptional example I have ever seen. This piece perhaps was on a single voyage, and then protected & treasured. Unquestionably, it is a museum quality piece.
Measurements
The piecemeasures 10\" tall, 13.25\" wide, and 8.5\" deep.
Condition Report
Overall, the piece is insuperb condition, as nice an example as I haveseen. The only concern I see is that it is missing its latch. Themetal work is complete, has a rich and worn patina, where the hand-etched designs are well accented by the exposure to seawater. The piece is complete with its original hingesand free of restorations.
