Hermann Hugo Otto Poertzel … (born 24th Oct 1876 in Scheibe, died 16th Jan 1963 in Coberg)

Otto Poertzel was born as a third child of Wilhelm Poertzel and his wife Emilie Candida, a native of Pabst.He attended the Volksschule in Scheibe and later had private lessons with Kantor Sichert and Pastor Henkel.The localporcelain factory AW FR. Kistertook him as an apprentice, initially for one year in the mould and model casting workshop and then for 1.5 years in the studio to produce new models, where he was trained as a porcelain modeller.His father was already a designer for porcelain sculptures.From October 1, 1893, Otto Poertzel visitedSonnenberg where hestayed forthree years.He studied withReinhard Mollerat theTechnical Academy for Porcelain(one of the specialties of the industrial school).Here he received A grades in the subjects of drawing, modeling, shaping and anatomy. He followed a short course in the studio of G. Stellmacher inGotha, where he worked on designs of new models for various branches of industry.

From 1900, Otto Poertzel worked as an independent sculptor in Coburg.He received orders for stone and bronze sculptures from state and municipal authorities, and in 1907 created the bust of theAlexandrine fountain.In 1908 he went toMunich, where he had his own studio and studied at theKunstakademiewithErwin Kurz, a pupil ofAdolf von Hildebrand.On 23 June 1909 he married Henny Breyding in Munich and in 1910 he built a villa with a studio in the Coburg hillside 8.

Among other things, he was known for his bronze statuettes in the style ofArt Deco, with which he portrayed dancers, circus artists, film stars and elegant young women in a graceful manner.His figures were handmade and sold by Rosenthal and Maeder and byPreiss and Kassler.

Otto Poertzel participated in numerous international art exhibitions displaying his exquisite models, such as at theSt Louis World’s Fair(1904) and theBrussels International Art Exhibition(1910).

In the 1920s and 1930s, Poertzel received numerous commissions for portraits of various family members of the Saxon-Coberg and Gotha family.From 1931 to 1938 he worked for the Max Feinsteingutfabrik in Rodach.The works of Otto Poertzel are highly prized and collected all over the world.

On July 19, 1913, Otto Poertzel was given the title of Professor of Duke Carl Edward, and he was also the bearer of the Knights\' Cross of the House of Ernestine.He was also a founding member of the Coberg Kunstverein and a member of the Reichverbande bildende Kunstlerdeutschland (GermanAssociation of German Artists), as well as a long-standing chairman of the Industrial and Judiciary Commission and honorary chairman of the Schutzverbandesbildender Kunstler.
