Hereon offer is a superband rare antique Victorian table top stereoscope viewer, dating to the 1880s.

This unusual table stereoscope made around 1880 was used to displaystereoscopic and mono view photographs. It was invented in 1840 by CharlesWheatstone. This optical device is designed to generate a three-dimensionalimages or depth effects from photos in two dimensions. It is sometimes called astereoviewer, stereoscope or stereo-graphoscope.

The wonderful stereo viewer is made from wood. The outer surface has awonderful glossy black lacquered surface that has delicately hand painted rosegarlands. The lenses are held in place with prominent turned frames. There is amoveable easel that holds the cards, when correctly positioned, the images comeinto focus with a three –dimensional effect gained by looking at a double imagethrough the pair of smaller lenses, the larger lens would be used for viewingand examining a single image photograph.

The viewer folds neatly into the black lacquered box. To use the vieweryou would need to open the base and prop it into the required height position.You would then open the lid and secure it in place using the gilt brassbracket, catching it on to the gilt screw. Next you would lift the easel intothe upright position, moving the cradle to enable viewing the image through theappropriate lens or lenses, this can be fixed in position using the bracketsbetween the uprights and the wooden cradle. The easel can be moved towards thelenses or away by sliding it along the base.

One of the frames around the smaller lenses has a crack with anhistorical repair. Part of the wooden lining to the lid has a small crack. Thelenses and lid is stable and secure. The gilt brass screw to hold the bracketappears to be a newer addition and not contemporary to the box. The base has agreen felt pad which is a newer addition. There are some minor marks to thesurface.

This rare stereoviewer is offered in good antique condition, it measuresabout 27.5cm by 17.2cm by 10cm and weighs 1203g.
