Superb Russian Pre Revolution Silver & Gold Cigarette Case

Presented is a superb Russian silver cigarette case, with applied gold decorations. This is a fantastic pre-Revolution piece, dating to the early 1900s. The case is beautifully decorated on the front with hand engraved designs. Applied on the front are various decorations: a gold horseshoe with a garnet in the middle; an assortment of tools, with a hand holding a Flag, all in gold; an axe, helmet and ladder, possibly firefighter gear, also in gold; a silver rooster; and in the center, in gold, some things I don\'t recognise. An applied banner shape in rose gold is engraved with a name or presentation which I can\'t read. The back of the case has an applied rose gold monogram. The button of the case is set with a blue stone, likely a sapphire. The interior has a gold wash and a yellow band on either side to hold in cigarettes. This is a large size, long case, so it will accommodate longer cigarettes than many old cases. The case is quite heavy and well made, a truly wonderful piece.

The case is in great overall condition. It the button opens the case easily and the case snaps shut securely. The interior bands have some wear, and have lost some of their elasticity, as you\'d expect for a piece of this age. The rooster decoration is missing its leg. The garnet set in the horseshoe decoration has a chip. The case has a couple of nicks or dings here and there. The case itself has no splits, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs.

The interior of the case is stamped with the Kokoshnik mark for Moscow, as used between 1908-1926, with the number 84 indicating 875 purity silver. There is also the maker\'s mark MK, probably for Michael Kropurishnikov, a maker active circa 1875-1906. Both of these stamps appear on both sides of the case.

The case measures about 4 3/4 by 3 inches, LxW.

This piece weighs 184 grams or 6.5 regular ounces. We estimate that at least 10 grams of this weight is in the gold applied decorations.
