Description:This sale is for a beautiful and authenticIranian / Persian prayer rug (سجادة‎‎), with a brillianthand-blocked design. It dates to approximately 1930. I have had it for years, andused it as a wall hanging. It is truly an inspired blocked design, as thedesign of a prayer mat is based on the village it came from. This rug has beenhand-blocked; older prayer rugs were hand-woven. Due to the increase in demand,Muslims now employ either blocked or woven rugs. This rug has all the elementsof authenticity. There is a niche at one end, representing the mihrab in everymosque – a directional ‘point’ to direct the worshipper toward Mecca. Additionally,there are designs at the top and around the mihrab that may be symbols of thelamps used in the mosques. This prayer rug was one used by an experiencedprayer, as it does not show where the hands should be located or pictures of acomb or pitcher, to remind the prayer to wash his hands and comb his hair. Thefringe is where the knees are to be placed, I believe. This beautiful prayerrug or mat has that fringe, hand-tied, on one end. The colors are still vibrantwith blue, red and yellow on an ivory background. All fringe remains attachedand complete. On the reverse side of the prayer mat at the lower left is amark, reading: IRAN │ PERSIA / Trade Mark (with a symbol of a winged person) /36 by 36. This is an elaborate, authentic, and very useable prayer rug/mat, anddoes look beautiful as a wall decoration by those who are not of that faith.

*The prayer rug has a very strong symbolicmeaning and traditionally taken care of in a holy manner. It is disrespectfulfor one to place a prayer mat in a dirty location (as Muslims have to be cleanto show their respect to their god) or throw it around in a disrespectfulmanner. The prayer mat is traditionally made in a rectangular design, madeasymmetrical by the niche at the head end. Within the rectangle one usuallyfinds images ofIslamicsymbolsandarchitecture. Decorations not only are important butalso have a deep sense of value in the design of the prayer rug. Prayer rugs areusually made in the towns or villages of the communities who use them and areoften named after the origins of those who deal and collect them. The exactpattern will vary greatly by original makers and different materials are used.Some may have patterns, dyes and materials that are traditional/native to theregion in which they were made. Prayer rugs\' patterns generally have a niche atthe top, which is turned to face Mecca. During prayer the supplicant kneels atthe base of the rug and places his or her hands at either side of the niche atthe top of the rug, his or her forehead touching the niche.
