This is a superb and very unusual design antique Victorian circa 1890 sterling silver Scottish agate brooch. The brooch looks like it has been a conversion from possibly a bracelet panel.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The stunning stones are orange jaspers from the Campsie Fells in Stirlingshire and green and red speckled bloodstones from the Isle of Rum, pink agate from Cupar in Fife and mustard jaspers also from the Campsie Fells.
The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces of this period, but has been fully tested and is sterling silver. The width is 4.3 cm ( One and three quarter inches ) and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition although not original.
