This is a superb quality antique Victorian dated 1869 sterling silver Scottish agate brooch. The stones are in beautiful condition as is the rest of the brooch so has been well cared for over the last 140 + years.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The classic stones are quality grey banded agates from Montrose on the east coast.
The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces of this period but has been fully tested by a local jeweller and is sterling silver.The brooch does have a diamond registration mark on the back which registers the piece to the 18th January 1869. The width is 4.0 cm ( One and three fifth inches ) and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original.
