This is a superb quality large antique Victorian circa 1890 sterling silver Scottish agate fouled anchor brooch.
The fouled anchor is a classic Victorian love symbol with the anchor meaning steadfastness and the fouling wire meaning entwined forever.The silver is superbly engraved on the front.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The amazing stone is a long carved octagonal section of brown and white banded agate from near Scurdie Ness on the east coast.The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces of this period but has been fully tested and is sterling silver. The length is large at 9.2 cm ( Three and two third inches ) and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original.
