This is a superb large antique Victorian period circa 1890 sterling silver Scottish agate flower head design brooch.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The stones chosen are superb in in great condition. They include grey banded Montrose agates, green and red speckled bloodstones from the Isle of Rum and pink /purple agates from Kinneff in Kincardineshire.The back is made from slate which is also in lovely condition.
The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces from this period but has been fully tested and is sterling silver. The width is large at 5.5 cm ( Two and a fifth inches ) and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original.
