Superb extremely rare 1805 T&J Hollins marked Georgian stoneware Lord Nelson jug:
$599.99

We are listing this superbly sprigged extremely rarely seen 1805 Georgian stoneware Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson memorial jug which was made by the brothers Thomas and John Hollins following the tragic and heroic death of Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. This particular jug is very rare since it was only produced to commemorate Nelson\'s death, although I\'m sure that others exist - I am aware of another one in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich (London), although I believe that jug may have been repaired. The listed jug is impressed on its base with the T&J Hollins mark used by Thomas and John Hollins between 1789 and 1809, and \"marked T&J Hollins wares are very rare\" (page 146 of ENGLISH DRY-BODIED STONEWARE Wedgwood and Contemporary Manufacturers 1774-1830). Nelson was a larger than life heroic figure to his countrymen even before his death, having previously lost an eye, and then his right arm, in his previous naval service. But the Battle of Trafalgar was his ultimate defining moment as he constantly exposed himself to danger heroically directing the British navy to victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets, with the directive to his men that \"England expects that every man will do his duty.\" Near the end of the battle Nelson was mortally wounded by a French sharpshooter, although he lived long enough to learn of the ultimate victory (with his final words being \"God and my country\"). The wonderful sprigging of this jug (set against a heavily stippled background) captures the epic moment in British history, with Nelson\'s full-masted ship on the front, the figure of Nelson (note the missing right arm) on one side with crossed Flags and cannons above him, and on the other side Britannia (with a shield, spear, lion, and cornucopia) points toward the figure of Victory (blowing a trumpet and holding a wreath). The jug has gilding around its rim (and on two screws at the top of its handle), a deep brown glaze on its reeded neck and upper handle, a stylized acanthus leaf terminal on its handle, an additional sprig on the Nelson side of the jug of an unusual tree with a large flower on it (a sprig used by John Turner in the 1790s), and engine turning above its base. It is almost 7.5 inches tall, 8 inches at its widest point, superbly potted and sprigged, very nicely decorated, makes a very striking display piece, and it is in very good condition. There is some normal wear on the gilding at the top of the rim, a couple of tiny typical separation lines in the sprigging, and some light browning to the white body of the jug (which I believe is common on Hollins pieces). Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. A rare and quite wonderful piece of Georgian history.
