We are listing this superb very rarely seen pierced and bright cut decorated little 1793 Georgian sterling silver caddy spoon by the well known London silversmith silversmith George Burrows I. Caddy spoons are one of the smallest, most decorative, and most rarely seen pieces of specialized silver used by the Georgian gentry - in this case, to transfer tea leaves to the teapot from the tea caddy (box), when tea was an extremely rare and valuable commodity. The original caddy spoons from the Orient were frequently small shells which fit in the tea caddy, which is why the English silver ones are commonly shell shaped with very short handles. This spoon has a less commonly seen round bowl shape with an unusual swirling bright cut decorated and pierced design, a nicely decorated handle with an open shield at its top, and it is marked on the back of its handle with a lion passant, the date letter s (used in 1793-1794), a rubbed duty mark facing right, and a GB maker\'s mark. This mark was recorded in the 1769 by London silversmith George Burrows I (see page 64 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). The reference book on caddy spoons, CADDY SPOONS An Illustrated Guide, notes on page 15 that Burrows was \"an excellent caddy spoon-maker\" and on page 11 that \"few (caddy-spoon makers) could surpass in delicacy the work of George Burrows.\" The book includes pictures of a number of his caddy spoons, and this particular spoon is shown on Plate 21. The spoon is over 3 inches long, has a bowl 1.5 inches across, weighs .3 ounces, it is very nicely shaped and beautifully pierced and decorated, and it is in very good condition. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the spoon has not been professionally polished). A superbly decorated very rarely seen little piece of Georgian silver. Since it is not monogrammed, it would be easy to personalize this piece, either for yourself or as a gift for someone else.
