This is a superb large antique Victorian circa 1890 sterling silver Scottish agate brooch. The construction and use of raised stones and some inset stones is fabulous!
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The stones are classic green and red speckled bloodstones from the Isle of Rum, grey banded Montrose agate, a stunning central red and grey agate from Cupar in Fife and orange jaspers from the Campsie Fells in Stirlingshire.
The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces from this period but has been fully tested by a local jeweller and is sterling silver. The width is large at 4.5 cm ( One and four fifth inches ) and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original and has a loop fitted on the back for a safety chain if required.There is a scrape in the silver on the back which may be an old repair but does not affect the wear or look of the brooch.
