Superb old SONGYE female Nkisi power figure CONGO, DRC A fine and RARE Nkisi figure from the Songye people in DRC. I acquired this piece from a German collection in Nuremberg and it has been on display at an unidentified German sale house before (there was an sale number attached which is now missing). It has been professionally mounted to an acrylic base.
This piece is a female figure and from the style it can be attributed to Belande or Kalebwe. It has the typical iron bands on the head which are believed to be magical material. Attached ton the arms is a small animal horn and a bundle containing magical substances and feathersThe face is typical with flat nose, open mouth. Very often these figures are adorned with glass beads as is also the case here.
Overall this figure has great expressive quality and shows age, a good patina and wear due to use. Definitely a rare piece.origin: Songye people, Southeast of Democratic Republic of Congo
