Superb reproduction of 1700s Westerwald Georgian flower sprigged stoneware mug :
$84.99

We are listing this superb high quality reproduction of a mid 1700s Westerwald Georgian stoneware mug which has a very striking sprigged and incised flower blossom design wrapping around its body. It was likely made for either Historic Jamestown or Colonial Williamsburg by a factory in Cologne Germany during a brief period in the late 1900s. The Westerwald area of Germany was famous for centuries for its blue and gray stonewares, including GR (George Rex, or George the King) marked pieces which were made for export to England and its colonies (England\'s George I-III were also Dukes and Prince-Electors of the Hanover Duchy in what is now Germany). However the style of design on this mug was probably meant for domestic use in Germany, which is why you very seldom see one in the United States (although they seldom survived intact in Germany either). You can see an almost identical humpen (tankard) from the 1700s which resides in the internationally acclaimed Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin) on page 357 of the German book STEINZEUG (Stoneware). However, I have had confirmation from collectors who are familiar with Colonial Williamsburg and Historic Jamestown that this is likely one of the high quality reproductions the institutions had made for them in the last century by a pottery in Cologne Germany. The listed mug has a blue glazed background with wonderfully incised and sprigged flower blossoms wrapping around its body, a simple looped handle with a thumbprint terminal, and a wirecut base. It is 4.25 inches tall, over 5 inches at its widest point, it displays very well, and it is in very good condition. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. This is a very high quality reproduction a very rarely seen piece of 1700s Westerwald Georgian stoneware which was made for major American historical institutions, and it is a wonderfully decorative item as well.
