Superb very rarely seen 1790s Turner Georgian classically sprigged stoneware mug:
$249.99

We are listing this superbly sprigged 1790s Georgian brown glazed creamy white stoneware classical mug by the great English potter John Turner (a friend and later competitor of Josiah Wedgwood), who was appointed The Potter to The Prince of Wales in 1784. The jug is impressed on its base with the TURNER mark used by John Turner (and his sons William and John) from 1780-1806. John Turner was known for the hard, dense dry-bodied stoneware he created using a specific type of white clay, and for the quality and innovative nature of his sprigging, which rivaled and sometimes surpassed Wedgwood\'s. This mug epitomizes the qualities that made him so famous, with its beautifully potted creamy white body, striking brown glaze at the top, a simple yet elegant handle, and its sublimely sprigged details. The central sprig is a wonderful scene of three children or cherubs playacting as classical gods and goddesses and it is one of Turner\'s more memorable classical sprigs. The jug also features very nice tree sprigs on each side, and engine turning above its base. Turner\'s mugs are much more uncommon than his jugs, so this is a rarely seen piece (particularly with its wonderful sprigging). You can see an example of a Turner jug with this particular sprigging from the Stoke-on-Trent City Museum on page 91 of AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO BRITISH JUGS. Years later in the early 1800s Benjamin Adams (Adams Pottery) also used the same sprig, and you can see an example of his version on a jug on page 92 of the same book. The listed mug is almost 4 inches tall, almost 5.5 inches at its widest point, it is superbly sprigged (with a wonderful classical scene), it displays very well, and it is in very good condition. To be very picky - there is a very small glaze drip on the back side of the mug, some light rubbing on the glaze on one side (see the next to last picture), and a couple of extremely tiny rough spots on the base edge toward the front (see the last picture). None of these very minor flaws affect the look of this piece at all. John Turner\'s masterpieces can be found in many of the great museums and personal collections around the world, and this is a wonderful example of both his creativity and his attention to detail.
