A very yellow glazed 14-16th Century ceramictea pot with top. Sawankhlok.5.25 inches high and 3.5 inches diameter. Unbroken. Glazed half on the outside. Glaze inside partially remaining to the ship burial in the sea. From a shipwreck and provenance of major Eastern US educational institution. There is all around wear/chips tip of the spout with glaze lost and possibly missing a small bit.


History

The district was originally the capital district of Sawankhalok province, which in 1932 was merged with Sukhothai province.The new province was at first named Sawankhalok, but in 1939 was renamed to Sukhothai and its capital district moved to Sukhothai district

In 1917, the district was renamed from Mueang (เมือง) to Wang Mai Khon (วังไม้ขอน).[ 1938 it was named Mueang Sawankhalok was changed to only Sawankhalok in 1939 following the province rename.

The area is well known for its Thai ceramics of the same name, which flourished in the 14th century – 16th century CE.
