Here is a neat stereoview from the 1873 Wheeler Expedition. This is view#3. The Two “Beauties” – Zuni Indian Belles 16 and 18 years of age. Photo by T H O’Sullivan. In May, 1871, Lt, George M. Wheeler (U.S. Army Corp of Engineers) and a team of soldiers, scientists, mule skinners, packers, laborers, guides, and a photographer assembled at Fort Halleck, Nevada. Their mission: to explore the American Southwest for the purpose of obtaining \"correct topographical knowledge of those portions of the United States Territory lying south of the Central Pacific Railroad.\" Working only in late spring, summer and early fall, Wheeler\'s expedition continued for several years, mapping and photographing vast areas of present-day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The 1873 stereographs, photographed by Timothy H. O\'Sullivan, were published the following year on official War Department mounts. They range in number from 1 through 89, with a few gaps in the numerical sequence. This has a paper tag on the back. Light soiling. Images are good.
